Background
Emmanuel United Church has been exploring possibilities for a potential global partnership in Africa. Over the past ten years, a number of new members have arrived from Africa. And during the past six years Emmanuelites have travelled to South Africa, Kenya and Zambia. We chose Zambia because it is stable and peaceful, and the United Church of Canada already has a global partnership with the United Church of Zambia.
Two previous trips in 2009 (Christine Williams with the United Church of Canada's Omega Bula) and in 2010 (Tony Campbell and Jessica Williams) paved the way for a more intentional visit in 2011. The objective of this year's trip was two-fold, to meet with:
Trip descriptions
- People's Action Forum (PAF) to prepare for the building of a school in Munenga, a remote village. Iain Beaudoin, son of Bob and Claudia Beaudoin, passed away suddenly on November 14, 2008. Iain was a promising lawyer, following in his father's footsteps, both highly respected members of the Ottawa legal community. Since his death, members of the Ottawa legal community have expressed interest in building a school in a developing country, in Iain's memory and have asked to partner with Emmanuel.
- Chipembi Congregation of the United Church of Zambia on the Chipembi Mission Station, to explore a global partnership. We also met with Chief Chamuka, and staff at the Chipembi Girls School, Basic School, Agricultural College and Medical Clinic.
